The year of 2020 was challenging for the whole world. The emergence and spread of COVID-19, forced us to stop our activities and relearn how to live in society. Most of the economic sectors were affected. It was no different with law. The pandemic caused the closing of all Brazilian Courts for a long period of time, creating barriers to the exercise of our economic activity.

As a result, several cases had their processing suspended by the Courts, prolonging its duration indefinitely. There were also situations in which appeals and writs of habeas corpus were judged online by videoconference, bringing undeniable damage to the right of defense of the parties. In this regard, the media reported facts that caused real perplexity[1].

Nevertheless, in the midst of this scenario of uncertainty, DECARO ADVOCACIA was able to celebrate happy moments. The first was a victory involving a police investigation initiated in 2015 to investigate the crime of currency evasion (Article 22, sole paragraph, of Law No. 7.492/86) and money laundering (Article 1, of Law No. 9.613 / 98). After five long years of investigation, on which we presented effective defense work, the Public Prosecutor’s Office decided not to file criminal complaint against our clients, as there were not enough elements to do so. This manifestation was accepted by the competent Federal Court. Case closed.

Likewise, in 2020 DECARO ADVOCACIA was also fortunate to participate, as an advisor, in structuring a commercial operation involving raising of funds abroad for use in the national financial market. We acted so that an operation was carried out in accordance with the criminal regulations made by law, as well as in the regulatory acts published by the CVM (Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission).

Finally, at the end of the year, we had the joy of being hired to work on two very interesting causes. The first involves investigation on tax crimes, financial crimes and money laundering. The second involves investigation on regulatory issues, whose effects are also projected in the criminal sphere. In both cases, although they are still at the beginning, we believe they will be challenging!

In summary, these were the main events of the year at DECARO ADVOCACIA. We thank you for the opportunity and confidence in our work, and we wish you a successful 2021 in all aspects!
